I worked on a team transforming the B.C. government web site to be more focused, effective and usable for citizens, businesses and the other agencies. I worked with multiple ministries to analyse and refactor web content to improve its quality and usefulness for target audiences. As part of transformation, we trained subject matter experts and reduced ongoing maintenance.

I partnered with CloverPoint Cartographics, Inc to help a startup (AddonX, Inc) to produce an innovative web and desktop file sharing system. We came up with a unified technical and UI design that worked across multiple browsers and the desktop.

MicroDivision, Inc is a NY-based software firm that sought my help in a new product idea. I designed their web-based interactive video help system after identifying a viable market, engagement system, software components and technical requirements. My design was a ground-breaking web 2.0 multimedia help system that monetized the connection between learners and experts. My role included market analysis, UX design, system design & technical development.
Software Architect/UX Design – Mercurial Communications, Inc
Mercurial was a small software development company. I helped secure high-profile contracts for $11M worth of business from Microsoft, AOL & Netscape. As full-time Chief Architect, I was key to fulfilling those contracts, designing products, building teams, UX/UI design, client liaison/presentation, coding and overseeing a large team of developers, artists and testers.

UX Developer – Atomic Energy Canada (Canadian govt)
I worked in ADAPT (Advanced Decision Aids & Productivity Tools) designing leading edge software for mission and life-critical applications. Projects included an interactive multimedia system to explain nuclear energy’s pros and cons, a risk management analysis tool and a visualization tool for high energy food irradiators. My design for an Emergency Operator Assist system for nuclear reactor operators won international acclaim. The system pro-actively brought information and visualizations to help operators safely handle nuclear emergencies quickly, safely and calmly.

Portfolio of Products & Sites I Designed
After Dark Screensaver product line
After Dark was the award winning #1 selling software product worldwide. It shows that great design can expand and even create new markets. As User Experience and Technical Designer, I had responsibility over every aspect of development. Our products created a massively profitable screensaver market where none existed before. Methodical iterative improvements using user feedback allowed our products to achieve extremely high customer satisfaction and profitability. After Dark became a pop icon featured in TV shows, comic strips and movies and influential in software design. UX Design, Team Lead, public speaking/presentation.
Moment Personal Media Web System
Moment was a system that unlocked more value from personal media while creating lucrative e-commerce opportunities. It was a scalable client-server engagement platform, site and app based on my patent-pending inventions, adding value and meaning to media, story-telling and social connections. It inspired former execs from Adobe, Second Life, DivX and LucasArts to get involved and acclaim from luminaries such as Apple founder Steve Wozniak. Funding issues kept the product from reaching market, but a lot was learned about design, startups, testing, web-based dev, VCs and team management. UX/UI Design, Tech Design, Team Lead.
Microsoft Utilities and Connection Wizard
As Windows XP was getting ready for launch, Microsoft gave me creative license to dream up innovative tools and utilities to enhance and draw attention to the new operating system. I created crowd-pleasing utilities to engage users with the improved desktop user experience. Since the apps were very successful with many millions downloading them, Microsoft contracted me to make updated versions and lead dev on the Microsoft Connection Wizard to help people use Windows Messenger and videoconferencing.

Playboost Customer Engagement Web App
I helped Neverblue redesign Playboost as a web-driven client-side app to increase user engagement with online games. The UX redesign gave it much more reach, a desktop presence and allowed expansion into a more profitable game center. I worked with their product and dev team to build & test the new engagement app.
Netscape Web Browser, Pointcast media app & AOL projects
I was sought out by AOL to design/redesign several high profile projects including the influential Netscape web browser. I was instrumental in getting the contracts, UI/UX design, building the team and overseeing usability/technical testing as well as being a trusted contact point for top AOL executives. The success of the browser work lead to many other AOL projects such as Pointcast, Netscape App Installer, AIM toolbar and the AOL PC. System Architect, UI Design, Tech Lead, Bus development.

Web site & Branding Vital Body Healing & Training
Vital Body is a local business offering various massage services, yoga and personal training. I was tasked with bringing focus to the brand by designing and building a site the unified the various services and how they relate to real world customer needs. Metrics show it improves customer acquisition, retention and cross-marketing.
UpLevel MA Training System
I developed UpLevel, the first web system to systematically streamline and improve how real world skills are taught. As owner of a martial arts studio, I’ve done two decades of research into improved training methods while improving my coaching skills. UpLevel is a unique data driven UX system, like a Khan Academy for real world skills. Metrics show that student scores, satisfaction and retention are greatly improved while instructor workload is vastly reduced.
PowerDrawers User Experience Utility
PowerDrawers was an award-winning utility that I designed and built to improve the user interface of Microsoft Windows. It enhanced and improved the usability of Windows Explorer and the desktop.

Operation: Inner Space Action Game
Inner Space is a highly acclaimed Windows action game sold to the general public. It shows the importance of user experience over eye candy. My UX design and adaptive game play system allowed the deceptively simple 2D game to amaze users and last the test of time. It is unique in still being played and purchased in its initial form 20 years after initial release. Its success was the result of careful analysis, data collection, and iterating to improve the experience for customers.
