Why is there an empty pause when opening some files? |
It is disconcerting when opening a document or a shortcut to a web site and the computer seems to do nothing for a few seconds and then proceeds to open the document or web site. Unfortunately,
Power Drawers has nothing to do with such delays. Such delays also occur if you open some documents by double-clicking on them in Explorer. When an item is selected in
Power Drawers, it is launched to open right away. Obviously, such delays are more likely on slower computers, but can occur when opening some documents on the fastest PCs.
The delay seems to be caused by the application (such as Internet Explorer or Word) for the document trying to load itself and associated DLLs into memory before opening the document itself. It can be frustrating since a document might open very fast usually and other times there will be a 5 second pause while nothing appears to be happening even on fast computers. Such pauses are equally likely when using
Power Drawers or Explorer to open files and internet sites.
One useful thing our testers have found is that when such pauses occur, closing Microsoft Outlook often fixes the problem. Sometimes closing and re-opening Outlook is enough to get rid of the delay when opening documents. For some reason, most installation programs run very slowly or not at all while Outlook is running.
